Estimation Formula: Calculations assume a standard 10mm (0.4 inch) mortar joint thickness. Dry mortar volume is calculated by multiplying wet mortar volume by a factor of 1.25. Default Nepalese brick size is 230mm x 110mm x 55mm.
Brick Masonry & Mortar Estimation Rules in Nepal
Standard Nepali machine-made red clay bricks adhere to nominal dimensions of 230 mm × 110 mm × 70 mm (approx. 9" × 4.5" × 2.75"). When estimating masonry construction:
- Standard Brick Requirement: Approximately 530 bricks per cubic meter of 9-inch wall masonry (including 10mm mortar joints).
- Mortar Volume: Approximately 0.30 m³ of wet mortar is required per 1 m³ of brick masonry.
- Dry Mortar Conversion: Dry mortar volume is calculated by adding 33% for voids and shrinkage (Dry = 1.33 × Wet).
- Recommended Mortar Ratios: 1:4 (Cement : Sand) for load-bearing and exterior 9-inch walls; 1:6 for interior 4.5-inch partition walls.
- Site Wastage Allowance: A standard 5% breakage allowance is added for brick cartage and cutting.
